PEG-MGF is a synthetic, chemically modified analog of Mechano Growth Factor (MGF). The "PEG" refers to polyethylene glycol, a polymer chain covalently attached to the MGF peptide in a process called PEGylation.
MGF (Mechano Growth Factor): Also known as IGF-1Ec, it is a locally expressed splice variant of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1). Its expression is rapidly upregulated in skeletal muscle, cardiac tissue, and neural tissue in response to mechanical load, damage, or stress. It functions primarily as an autocrine/paracrine signaling molecule.
Purpose of PEGylation: This is a standard biochemical modification in protein/peptide research designed to:
Increase Plasma Half-life: The PEG "cloud" sterically hinders proteolytic enzymes and renal filtration, dramatically slowing clearance.
Alter Pharmacokinetics: Converts a short-lived, locally acting peptide into a longer-circulating molecule for systemic study.
Potentially Enhance Solubility and Stability.
Therefore, PEG-MGF is a research tool created to study the prolonged, systemic effects of MGF signaling in controlled animal models, which is not possible with the transient, endogenous form.
