Gonadorelin's effect is powerful but depends entirely on how it is administered. It has two seemingly opposite uses, which can be confusing.
1. As a Diagnostic Tool (The "Pulse Test")
This is its most common use. A single dose of gonadorelin is given to test the body's reproductive system.
What it does: It stimulates the pituitary gland to see if it can release a burst of LH and FSH.
Why it's used: To diagnose the cause of infertility or delayed puberty.

2. As a Treatment (The "Pump" vs. "The Blocker")

How it's given: Given in small, frequent pulses (via a portable pump) that mimic the body's natural rhythm (every 90 minutes or so).

B. Continuous Administration (Shutting Things Down):
How it's given: Given as a constant, non-stop infusion or a long-acting depot injection.
What it does: This constant flood of GnRH SHUTS DOWN the reproductive system. It overstimulates the pituitary gland, which causes it to eventually become desensitized and stop responding. This leads to a dramatic drop in LH, FSH, and consequently, estrogen and testosterone.
Why this is useful: This effect is used to treat conditions that are fueled by sex hormones:
Prostate Cancer: Lowering testosterone can slow cancer growth.
Endometriosis: Lowering estrogen reduces the inflammation and pain.
Uterine Fibroids: Lowering estrogen can shrink fibroids.
